To decide on the best movies, actors, actresses, and a variety of other positions related to the film industry, the 98th Academy Awards ceremony took place on March 15 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
This year’s Oscars were historic in a few ways. First, “Sinners” came into the night with 16 Oscar nominations, the most ever, and walked away with four of them.
Secondly, the new category, Best Casting, was introduced this year’s awards, with casting director Cassandra Kulukundis winning the first-ever award for “One Battle After Another.”
Lastly, cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman and woman of color to win the award for best cinematography in “Sinners.”
Far and away, the most interesting awards of the night were the race for Best Picture and Leading Actor in a film.
The most important and contentious award of the night, Actor in a Leading Role, ended up going to Michael B. Jordan for his roles as twins, Smoke and Stack, in “Sinners.”
Initially, the race for this award was between Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet, with the latter being the favorite to win.
However, following Jordan’s win at the BAFTA Awards, he quickly became the favorite to win over Chalamet.
This loss by Chalamet capped off Marty Supreme’s disappointing night as the movie by the independent studio A24 and directed by Josh Safdie went 0-8
This occurred mostly because of the success of “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another.” “Marty Supreme” was a good movie, but compred to the other two it did not stand out in any particular area.
The exception to this is with the individual performances of the actors. Chalamet put on the performance of his career, and even more than that, he made the movie.
Without Chalamet and his performance “Marty Supreme” would not have been anywhere close to winning any Oscar’s.
For Michael B. Jordan, while his performance was great, it did not carry the movie the same way that Chalamet’s did, amd frankly, he should not have won that Oscar.
Coming into the night, Best Picture was split between “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another.” Both movies had a great cast an interesting plot.
However, to no real surprise “One Battle After Another” won “Best Picture” and finished the night with six total Oscar’s, including two for director Paul Thomas Anderson, his first.
‘Marty Supreme’ ‘spanked’ at Oscars, ‘One Battle After Another’ shines
“Sinners” and “One Battle After Another” won big at the Oscars on March 15.
