By working together and maintaining a cheerful atmosphere to boost team chemistry, the field hockey team strives to advance past the first round of district championships.
Due to not making it past the first round of the district championships last season, the team has decided to step it up a notch and focus on team chemistry, staying game-ready and focused.
Assistant coach Claire McAllister sees the team’s chemistry growing as they get hype for each game.
“They make sure that everyone’s getting excited and they’re focusing on being competitive but also having fun, which I think is important,” McAllister said.
Captain Hannah Cornes believes that it’s important for them to work hard and keep up the intensity.
“We’re definitely working a lot more as a team this year instead of just a few people doing most of the work,” Cornes said. “I think that’s really been helping us work together.”
For Cornes, it’s helping out where she can, due to everyone having a different role in the team.
“Definitely doing a lot of talking on the field and kind of guiding people,” Cornes said, “especially a few of the younger girls on the team, maybe don’t know where to go. I can talk to my teammates and help them.”
As for captain Charlotte McNeil, she sees them more as a “unit” this year compared to last.
“I think this year you can feel it more,” McNeil said. “We’re trying to outlet the ball more and make sure everyone uplifts the team and themselves too.”
McNeil mentions that some people think that it takes one person on the team to be the catalyst.
“One person can’t carry the whole team,“ McNeil said. “Everyone on the field has to play their part, has to play their position.”
In order to “reach high levels,” McAllister believes they need to push themselves past their limits.
“Making sure they’re playing good field hockey and just trying to play good out of league opponents this year so we get prepared,” McAllister said.
