To help students build skills and become more involved, Unified PE teachers create an environment so students can work and exercise at a more modified pace.
According to support teacher Megan Maron, students work at slower paces to be more engaged in activities.
“If a student cannot walk or kick a ball, we find alternative ways for them to participate so they can still be involved,” Maran said.
Wellness teacher Karin Clark said that Unified PE is mainly focused on “relationships” and “connections.”
“[Students] realize they share common interests,” Clark said. “They share similar music interests and everyday experiences, and begin to see each other as equals. It creates a sense of belonging and connection.”
Maran said Unified PE helps students form “friendships.” “Students who might not usually interact begin spending time together,” Maran said. “These relationships continue outside of class, helping students feel more included and connected.”
Clark believes that the connections built in Unified PE have a lasting impact on students.
“Students greet each other, give high fives and continue those relationships outside of class,” Clark said. “Even students who took the class in previous years still maintain those connections.”
Student partners ensure all students know what they are doing and that they are having fun.
Sophomore Dylan Ebers said a goal of his is to give support to any student when they need it.
“If someone needs help kicking a ball or playing baseball, I show them how to do it and support them as they try,” Ebers said.
Clark feels that Unified PE has a significant impact on every student who takes the class.
“The general educated students often come in having a bad day, but leave feeling happier and more fulfilled,” Clark said. “The class builds confidence and creates a sense of inclusion for everyone involved.”
According to junior Liam Cook, becoming a student partner taught him to treat people with more ”respect” and “understanding.”
“It has changed the way I see and interact with people in general,” Cook said.
Cook feels that the Unified PE activities bring everyone together to compete, bond and have fun. “Some of my favorite memories are playing basketball with the group,” Cook said. “Those moments are always fun and bring everyone together.”
According to Maran, students work together in fun, modified physical activities physical activities including fitness, lifetime activities and individual and team sports.
“Together, they participate in modified versions of the same activities found in regular PE classes,” Maran said. “The goal is to make sure all students can be successful and included.”
