With many fingers pointing to a Super Bowl Championship repeat, the Eagles enter the 25’-26’ season with high hopes of winning a third Lombardi trophy. Still, early signs indicate a slight regression in the offense.
The Eagles in 2024 ended their year with a four-game playoff run that resulted in their second championship in franchise history, Saquon Barkley’s 2,000 rushing yard season, and the number one rated defense according to NFL ON FOX.
During the 2025 off-season, the Eagles lost six defensive starters to free agency and trades, leading to a complete overhaul of the defense.
Newcomers like linebacker Jihaad Campbell, defensive back Andrew Mukuba, and the promotion of Moro Ojomo on the defensive line have all stepped up this year.
Offensively, guard Mekhi Becton left in free agency, while offensive coordinator Kellen Moore left to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints.
To start the 2025 season, the Eagles opened with a divisional matchup against the Cowboys and Chiefs, coming out victorious against both teams.
Against the Cowboys, they allowed 20 points on three straight drives while the offensive responded with three touchdowns of their own.
The second half became a battle of mental strength and defense as the only points scored was a lone Eagles field goal in the third quarter.
The Eagles would force a fumble and stop the Cowboys on fourth down before running out the clock to win 24-20.
In a road trip to Arrowhead Stadium, the Eagles second half offensive struggles from week one would arise again as Jalen Hurts struggled to get the ball through the air, just totaling 101 yards the whole game while adding a rushing touchdown on the infamous tush push.
The defense would do its job again and held Kansas City to only 10 points until late in the fourth when the Eagles were already up by 10.
The signs of offensive struggle have popped up early in the year, as Hurts as thrown for zero touchdowns and A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith have struggled to put up good numbers.
In week three, the offense finally woke up after yet another irritating first half, with Hurts finally surpassing 200 passing yards and throwing for three touchdowns.
A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith both had season highs against the Rams as they went for over 169 yards and 14 catches, while catching two crucial touchdowns late in the game.
The Rams trailed by a point after the touchdown; a drive down the field would set up the eventual 44-yard field goal attempt.
Just seconds later, the Eagles blocked the kick, and defensive tackle Jordan Davis took the ball 61 yards to get the icing on the cake.
Entering week four, the Eagles would face their toughest match as they traveled down south for an undeafted clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Eagles opened up with a quick stop on defense and had a bit of deja vu with a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown.
Offensively, the Eagles saw much success as they scored 24 points in the first half with Hurts finding a rhythm in the passing game, throwing for 130 yards and two touchdown passes.
In the second half, the Eagles opened with the ball and went three and out, a common theme that would repeat itself the entire half.
Defensively, the Buccaneers adjustments were a bit too much as the defense allowed two 70+ yard touchdowns and almost allowed a near come from beheind win.
The Eagles would do just enough, forcing a fumble early in the third to put them up 31-13 along with a redzone interception by rookie Jihaad Campbell, just enough to keep the bucs out of reach as they advanced to 4-0 on the season.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, their inconsisent style of play would come back to bite them at home in week five.
The Denver Broncos traveled from the city of Mile High seeking their second straight win after a beat down of the Bengals on Monday Night Football.
The Eagles and Broncos exchanged defensive stops before both teams would travel down the field and kick chip shot field goals.
For the Birds, they responded with their high passing attack and were able to convert a third down and 13 with a deepball completion to DeVonta Smith, who surpassed 100 yards on the day.
Coming out of the half, Hurts on the opening drive would extend their 10-3 lead to a 14 point lead after finding Barkely for a 47-yard touchdown early in the third.
The Broncos would seeminly make adjustments as they were able to travel down the field in the fourth and scored one out of their two fourth quarter after a pass from Bo Nix. The Eagles would go scoreless after making it a two score game and followed patterns from the Buccaneers game, three and outs and too many sacks taken.
Nix and the Broncos would continue to chew clock and put up points as they again went down the field and scored another touchdown, this time getting the two point conversion.
The Eagles offense would shut down a couple of more times and would give the Broncos just enough time to chew clock and kick another field goal.
On the final drive of the game, Jalen Hurts would take a sack with a minute left and no timeouts, seeminly taking too much time to get to the line after that.
Hurts would set the Eagles on the Broncos’ side of the field and would have one more attempt, that being a hail mary.
The ball would reach DeVonta Smith’s hand but from an angle, A.J. Brown held back Smith and the ball would hit the ground as the Eagles feel to the Broncos 21-17.
The Eagles through the first five weeks are 4-1 leading not only the NFC East but the entire confrence, but those wins coming in the final minutes because of struggles from the offense and bail outs from the defense.
Since starting the year with zero touchdown passes, Hurts has thrown for seven touchdowns in three games and has yet to throw an interception, but the offense as a whole cannot finish a half or a game.
The loss to the Broncos was only the second loss in over a year for the Eagles, but it is safe to say this loss hurts more.
An up and down start to the year just through five weeks of football, fortunately, there are 12 games left in the season.
If the Eagles are looking for a repeat championship, the offense has to come together and find a rythmn, or else a sudden collapse, like in 2023, could happen again.
‘25-‘26 Eagles showing early signs of struggling
After a memorable four-game run that led to a 40-22 win in Super Bowl LIX over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles entered the 2025-2026 season with hopes of becoming the tenth team in NFL history to repeat as champions. They’re showing signs of regression with no plan to adjust.
