After a humbling 13-0 loss at home to Central Bucks West on September 5, in which the football team scored zero points despite allowing only a single touchdown and two field goals, they took time to refocus and reorganize their game plan.
For football coach Ed Gallagher, the only response after a home opener loss was to “reset and look ahead.”
“We won our first couple of games and we were probably feeling a little too good about ourselves,” Gallagher said, “but we definitely stepped it up over the last two weeks, and hopefully we’re reset and focused on achieving our goals.”
Following the home loss, the team traveled to Harry S. Truman, coming out victorious in a 41-point victory and returning home for a 309 Bowl showdown against Quakertown, once again, coming out on top by scoring 49 unanswered points after blanking in the first quarter.
Gallagher believes there is room for improvement as the season progresses and the games become more challenging.
“I think we had a really slow start last Friday against Quakertown, but we really stepped it up and played as well as we possibly could in the second half,” Gallagher said.” We keep that effort throughout the rest of the season, and we’ll be in great shape for the playoffs.”
With as much work as goes into football, it can also be a chance for people to show their competitiveness with their friends after school.
“Competing every day gives us a natural edge over our opponents each week,” captain Michael McCormick said. “A lot of my friends always give me their hardest, and that is the undeniable factor that helps me get ready each week.”
McCormick also saw the improvement between the weeks of Central Bucks West and Truman, stating that the “following two games were a testament” to what the team achieved in practice.
Captain Timmy Meehan acknowledges how well the seniors can capitalize on mistakes and hold each other accountable.
“Most of the seniors on this team have been playing together for years, so we hold each other to high standards,” Meehan said. “ We’ve already improved so much since the start of the year, and we have shown that we can be the best team in the league.”
Meehan mentions that the senior class was “once a part of history” in 2023 and 2024 with back to back league titles and an undefeated season. “Going into the second half of the year our goal is still the same, win the league and be the first team in Souderton history to 3-peat,” Meehan said.
On October 17, Souderton earned a 70-0 decisive Homecoming win over Council Rock North High School.
