Portraying his humble beginnings as a child musician, to being crowned the king of reggae, Bob Marley’s biopic accurately represents his kind character, chill music and priceless message.
Following the story of Bob Marley and his rise to fame, “Bob Marley: One love” focused on the “why” aspect of his music.
During a dark time for Jamaica, Marley believed he could use his voice for good.
He decided to host a concert to promote peace and advertise an end to the political violence taking place.
Just a few days before the concert, Marley, his manager Don Taylor and his wife Rita Marley were shot on their own property. All three survived.
Realizing the importance of the concert and its potential to unite Jamaica, Marley decided to perform, regardless of his injuries.
This scene perfectly sums up Bob Marley as a person: putting the peace of his nation before his own life.
The movie continues on to the production of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ first hit album, “Exodus,” and how it introduced the world to reggae.
This album led to fame and popularity not just in Jamaica but all over the world.
Kingsley Ben-Adir plays Bob Marley in the movie and he did an amazing job.
By the time Ben-Adir is in character, he bears a passing resemblance to Marley and gets his physical mannerisms down to near perfection.
According to Marley’s son, Ziggy Marley, the movie accurately portrays his father’s story and everything he represented.
Ziggy played a large role throughout the film.
Due to his young age at the time, Ziggy’s character in the movie is just a kid.
However, during the creation of the movie, Ziggy helped Kingsley get the character right because nobody knew Bob Marley better than his son.
Ziggy oversaw the acting and representation of his father to make sure he was played correctly.
One great aspect of the movie is the music.
If someone goes to see this movie they most likely know some of Bob Marley’s music; probably his hit songs like “Three Little Birds,” “Is This Love” or “Could You Be Loved.”
The amazing thing about “Bob Marley: One Love” is it featured archived songs that have been out for around 50 years but most people have never heard. Some of these lesser-known songs being “War/ No More Trouble,” “So Jah S’eh,” “Turn Your Lights Down Low” and “Natural Mystic.”
This movie not only provides fun entertainment for avid Bob Marley fans, but also introduces younger generations to reggae.
Bob Marley created music with a kind and powerful message that children today are not typically used to.
This movie promotes something different than today’s rap, pop or rock.
Listening to reggae is chill and relaxing and everybody should get to experience it.
For younger kids seeing this movie, there is no better introduction to the genre than Bob Marley himself.
The only downside of this movie is the pacing. While the majority of it is filled with interesting scenes, there are a few dull moments.
This creates a weird pacing, but ultimately the enjoyable scenes outweigh the slow ones.
“Bob Marley: One Love” is a great movie that pays homage to the Jamaican reggae legend by showing the audience that he was all about peace, love and happiness.
The acting is stellar, the message is powerful and the music is amazing.
Overall Rating: 8/10
