To improve and expand the Young Authors Club and its magazine, The Scarlette Gazette, students are working to grow the club this year through club meetings and events.
The Young Authors Club is one of the few literary clubs at the high school. In this club, students discuss written topics and practice writing through engaging discussions and prompts. The club meets every other Thursday from 3-4 p.m. in the student center.
The club began last year to open more opportunities for young writers and provide them the experience they need.
“Over the course of the year, not only will we discuss different genres, but by the end, we will walk through the publishing process,” advisor Michele Haytko said.
To learn about the publishing process, students will gain hands-on experience by creating and publishing their magazine, The Scarlette Gazette.
The magazine includes pieces from all genres of writing by various students, and a group story that the club members create together.
Haytko said The Scarlette Gazette’s purpose is to be “a compendium of their work,” to show everything they did over the course of the school year.
“When I brought up the idea there used to be, apparently many years ago, a literary magazine at the high school,” said Haytko, “but it had gone away.”
Now, the Young Authors Club is planning to bring the magazine back.
“We want to get something a bit bigger because we are very proud of what we had last year, but I believe we would like to outdo it,” said club president Cole DiNardo.
One goal for the club is to publish the second issue of The Scarlette Gazette.
Some members feel that the magazine was very rushed last year.
“They didn’t have as much impact on the editing process,” said Haytko.
This year, they want to spend extra time teaching club members the editing and publishing processes.
Social media manager Keya Dahale wants the Scarlette Gazette to be “more planned out” and “better put together” than it was last year.
Club members also have goals for not only this year, but for years to come.
A common goal the club has is to start raising money.
“Other than getting new members, I want to do more fundraising for The Scarlette Gazette,” said Dahale.
Both Dahale and DiNardo aim to expand the Young Authors Club and improve it.
“We want to get something a bit bigger because we are very proud of what we had last year, but I believe we would like to outdo it,” said DiNardo.
This year, they want to gain members.
