To raise funds for new materials and show the benefits of joining the club, the Crochet and Knitting Club is working hard to reach their goal of getting a table at Art and Soul Fest.
The club is led by advisor Rebecca Stonelake. Stonelake was inspired by the club at her previous school and wanted to share this “creative outlet” to the students of this school.
“I just like to see their creativity,” Stonelake said, “because crocheting is very personal and versatile.”
This year, the club has a new goal to get a table at Art and Soul Fest on March 14.
The club hopes Art and Soul Fest will attract new members to the club who might be interested in these skills.
Stonelake said the Art and Soul Fest will definitely put the club out there, especially because it is a growing craft since Covid.
“So I think people already know [the club] exists, but I think, if they’re seeing peers creating really cool things out of it, that they’re more likely to be like, “you know, I can give that a try,”” Stonelake said.
Stonelake emphasizes how she thinks the arts are vital to everyone and how everyone needs a way to express themselves.
“Everyone’s got their creative outlet, and many people have more than one. I just want it to be an option for people to find creativity,” Stonelake said.
The students spend time growing and improving their crocheting and knitting skills. They hope to be able to share their creativity and hard work while also raising funds for new materials in the club.
Sophomore Oliver Page said this event is a great opportunity to show their skills and even gain new members to the club.
“It also could raise funding for the club because we needed crochet needles, yarn and so on and so forth. It’s a very good place to show off what we have accomplished,” Page said.
This club allows students to both learn and improve their crocheting and knitting skills, welcoming all different skills ranges.
Stonelake said that they spend the first 5-10 minutes at the start of the meeting to see if anyone is new or needs help to learn a new pattern, so she can assist them while the others talk and work on their projects.
Page said this is his first year in the club, and he is inexperienced in crocheting.
“They give a lot of pointers if you are looking to improve,” Page said, “and they are always open to talks, which is very nice.”
Beyond just learning the skill of crocheting and knitting, this club allows students to gain skills like time management, endurance and patience. “Since some projects take a long time, you have to allocate time to different things,” officer Anu Murugasundaram said.
