Through easy-to-pass tests and a lack of education, new drivers in Pennsylvania are underprepared when faced with the challenges of driving on the road and often need driving lessons by a third party.
Drivers who want to get their permit in Pennsylvania need to pass a permit test.
This test is not very challenging, and allows inexperienced drivers to get on the road.
If changes were made to the current test, drivers would be more prepared for the road and less likely to crash.
If the test was more challenging it would force new drivers to study the basics and learn how to be on the road.
Now drivers don’t need to be taught by their parents or purchase a service to teach them to drive.
When drivers are not taught by their parents it will eliminate stress for the driver and their parents because driving with one’s parents can make the driving experience more stressful.
Tests that focus on what to do at an intersection or prepare a driver for the highway would be more effective than those that focus on the meaning of signs.
This could help drivers know what to do when they reach an intersection and keep them less stressed on the road.
According to Pennsylvania Pressroom, there were nearly 80,000 crashes that involved a 16 to 19-year-old driver, and 458 deaths within those crashes.
If the tests had been made more challenging and had helped drivers be more prepared for the challenges on the road, some of those crashes and deaths could have been avoided.
Furthermore, new drivers mainly endanger themselves when they are not fully prepared for the road.
According to PennDOT, the most common crash type for 16-year-old drivers is driving off the road and crashing into an obstacle. If extra driving education was made easily available for people in Pennsylvania, that would be great for everyone and would prevent drivers from getting into crashes.
Currently, extra education for drivers is very expensive and, on top of the fees for becoming a licensed driver, it can be hard to come up with that money; for some people, it is even unachievable.
This change would help keep driver’s insurance low, allow drivers to feel more comfortable on the road and allow parents to stress a little less about their kids beginning to drive.
The driving log is not a great way to ensure that drivers are learning how to drive because it is very easy to lie on the driving log.
Many drivers will not meet the required number of hours because it is tedious and they don’t want to do it.
Instead of a driving log, there should be cheaper, mandatory monthly lessons with a driving instructor to help drivers adjust.
They could help with things like what to do on a highway, parallel parking and driving in a city.
New drivers are ill-prepared for road challenges
The current driver education system in Pennsylvania allows ill-equipped drivers to get on the road and put themselves in danger.
