To celebrate their love for their mothers, teachers and students have various gifts and gestures they do to honor their moms on Mother’s Day, which took place on May 11.
Mother’s Day provides an opportunity for teachers and students to celebrate their moms’ impact on their lives and reflect on all they appreciate about their moms.
According to science teacher Melissa Kling, she made homemade crafts and cards for her mom when she was little.
As Kling got older, she started hosting brunch at her house, where her whole family and mother-in-law came over to show her gratitude for the mother figures in her life.
For Kling, she also values giving her mom hugs, notes and spending time with her to show appreciation.
“My mom just wants quality time, so a phone call or spending time with her is better than a text,” Kling said.
Every May, science teacher Louis Yanni celebrates Mother’s Day for his mom and wife.
To honor his mom, he enjoys taking her out shopping, especially to good restaurants because of her interest in cooking.
As for his wife, he gets her flowers every Mother’s Day.
“Usually it is getting her plants, but not just cut flowers,” Yanni said, “so they have to be flowers she can actually grow in the soil.”
According to sophomore Camryn Waters, the best gift is giving her mom a perfect day.
The perfect day for Waters’s mom would be a beach day spent with her family.
“She just loves to sit on the beach and listen to her music,” Waters said. “So I think if she could have one perfect day, that is what she would do.”
Waters also plans on getting flowers for her mom.
Receiving a flower makes her feel very appreciated, so in return, she wants her mom to feel appreciated as well. She will also get her fashion and jewelry.
Both juniors, Elizabeth Magnus and Lindsey Herninko, think a handwritten card and a bouquet are the perfect gifts for their moms, as it “touches the heart.”
Herninko also feels that a relaxed day would be ideal for her mom, including going to the spa, going on a walk outside and having lunch with her family.
For Kling, she recognizes Mother’s Day for her mother’s selflessness and hopes she can follow in her mom’s footsteps.
“Everything she does is for other people; she always puts herself last,” Kling said.
A memory that Kling cherishes with her mom are the Friday nights she spent as a kid.
Her mom would set up a picnic on the floor where they would eat chicken fingers or mac and cheese.
Kling and her brother also took turns picking movies.
Over the years, Yanni has learned to appreciate his mom more because he sees the things his wife has done for their children.
“I have learned to appreciate the day more,” Yanni said. “I try to make it a little bit more special than I have in the past when I was younger.”
Waters takes pride in the saying, “mothers know best,” because of how much her mom is a provider for her.
“She is always on top of everything,” Waters said. “My life would just be a mess without her.”
Waters admires how hardworking her mom is and feels inspired by her everyday, making Mother’s Day more impactful.
“It is really inspiring to see how much hard work pays off,” Waters said, “and how much she continues to grow.”
Magnus values Mother’s Day because it gives her the opportunity to show how grateful she is for her mom and all that she does for her.
“Sometimes we just take advantage of our moms, so just to have a day dedicated to her, it is just amazing,” Magnus said.
