To enhance school unity and spirit, Student Council hosted Red vs. White events in both the gymnasium and the natatorium on May 19-22.
“Red vs. White is a whole school competition, and we split the school into two teams based on last name, so A through L and then M Through Z, and then they compete in various different events,” Student Council advisor Melissa Kling said. “We have an art team that will create different banners and they’ll get points. We do a pool night where they compete in the pool, and a gym night.”
Last year was the first year of Red vs. White, so it is still a new activity that is evolving.
In Student Council, running the event is broken into jobs.
The Red Team has a general captain and then multiple other captains.
This is the same for the White Team.
“Captains represent [the students]. They hype up everyone and get everyone involved. Generals are more about overlooking the [groups] and the whole event,” Red Team General Maya Bernhauser said.
Along with the captains, generals and Kling, there are other people working behind the scenes, too.
One of them is Student Council officer Adelina Cutrona.
“So kind of what my role entails is that I help set up, create and formulate the events. I’m also really involved in pool night,” Cutrona said.
According to Cutrona, there are some changes coming from last year’s event, especially to pool night, to make the experience more accessible to all people who want to participate, not just those who do water sports.
“It’s definitely not just for swimmers,” Cutrona said.
Along with the gym and pool nights, there are also other competitions and contributions from the art classes and art volunteers.
“From the art perspective, we design the T-shirts and the banners to try to build excitement [for the event],” art teacher Sabrina Pistoria said.
Red vs. White bridges gaps between art, athletics
With help from students in all grades, Student Council hosted a school-wide Red vs. White event. Activities included a pool night on May 19 and a gym night on May 22.
