To ask others to prom, promposals are a fun tradition that encourages students to explore their creative side.
They are characterized by being extravagant and elaborately staged.
Prom season is around the corner, and there’s nothing better than a good promposal.
These are among the greatest high school traditions, allowing students to showcase their creativity.
Making or receiving a promposal can be a fun process, and it’s something students can look forward to.
According to the National Day Calendar, Promposal Day was started by Men’s Wearhouse in 2016 in an effort to inspire high schoolers to have the “ultimate promposal.”
While many believe that promposals are cheesy, it can be a fun experience to give or receive one. Receiving a thoughtful promposal can be extremely meaningful and can create a wonderful memory.
Most promposals contain some type of pun, or they could have a song or dance.
Some take a page out of Heath Ledger’s book and perform “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” to pay tribute to the popular movie, “10 Things I Hate About You.”
In Teen Vogue, some of the most viral promposals have been documented.
Most include choreographed dances performed by multiple people.
However, a unique standout one was performed by YouTuber Kaelen Walsh almost 13 years ago.
Walsh wrote “Prom?” on 500 Ping-Pong balls and filled them into his girlfriend, Rebekka’s, locker. When she opened it, they fell out, giving her a wonderful surprise.
Many ideas like this one can be done easily at home.
Promposals do not need to be expensive, and Walsh showed this through his.
While hiring a Mariachi band or getting tons of gifts for someone sounds like a dream come true, a meaningful proposal will be just the thing to get someone’s attention.
A favorite inside joke incorporated into a pun or a surprise somewhere special are both things that can make a wonderful and meaningful promposal.
However, some do take the expensive route. Nine years ago, YouTuber Jonathan Rizzo filled his girlfriend’s room with 350 balloons, streamers and a stuffed animal. He convinced her best friend to keep her occupied for the majority of the day, so she could come back to the surprise.
Some are on the sillier side. In 2014, KFC was selling “finger licking” corsages for prom. Most thought this was a funny joke, but they ended up selling chicken and baby’s breath corsages for $20.
Promposals are all about showing love for those around you. Even if it is not a romantic partner, promposing to friends can be just as fun.
Promposal culture inspires creativity, friendship
Giving students an opportunity to ask friends and partners to school dances, promposals have become a staple of prom season. Promposals were popularized in 2011.
