With President Donald Trump taking office for the second time on January 20, the U.S. has begun to face many new challenges. His first 100 days in office have prompted many opinions throughout the country.
According to Boston University senior writer Molly Callahan, the first 100 days of a presidency is typically thought to be important as it sets the tone for the rest of the term.
“The first 100 days in office for any new president generally spells a time of bold new direction for the country. It’s a time when they can make an impression and signal their management style, priorities, and speed in implementing campaign promises,” Callahan said.
So far into his term, Trump has already signed a record number of executive orders dealing with topics such as federal spending and immigration. The previous record was set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, during the Great Depression.
According to NBC News, the beginning of the term has been full of executive orders with the intent for major changes.
“The beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term has been marked by a flurry of executive orders aimed at fundamentally reshaping the government, America’s place on the global stage and the day-to-day lives of people in the country,” NBC News said.
According to White House correspondent Zeke Miller, Trump has been working hard to reverse the work of former President Joe Biden.
“Donald Trump began erasing Joe Biden’s legacy immediately after taking office as the nation’s 47th president, pardoning nearly all of his supporters who rioted at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and issuing a blizzard of executive orders that signal his desire to remake American institutions,” Miller said.
New tariffs have also been a part of Trump’s first 100 days in office.
Trump has placed tariffs on goods from China, Canada and Mexico.
“[Trump] says tariffs will encourage U.S. consumers to buy more American-made goods, increase the amount of tax raised and lead to huge levels of investment in the country,” BBC News said.
Many of Trump’s new actions have also focused on taking away federal funds from many programs.
According to Evergreen Action, “Trump’s funding cuts could impact roughly 2,600 programs” that are aimed to help the average person.
Some of the sectors that will likely be impacted include housing, transportation, environmental work and disaster relief.
The Department of Education has also faced change under Trump.
“We are going to shut it down and shut it down as quickly as possible,” Trump said.
