By making sure the team morale is high throughout the entire season and creating an atmosphere that everyone likes, Souderton’s wrestling coaches continue to keep the team motivated.
According to head wrestling coach William McGinley, wrestling is a hard sport that demands hard work.
“Wrestling is a sport that requires a lot of hard work and intensity and not as many competitions as other sports, so keeping those guys motivated for four to five months can be a little bit challenging,” McGinley said.
However, assistant coach Tristan Boyd has different struggles when it comes to the wrestling team.
“Lack of control, to a certain degree. We can design practices and try to provide structure to kids and help them to be their best, but at the end of the day the kids have to go out there and compete,” Boyd said.
It can be hard for coaches to keep their kids motivated, but it can also be a struggle for the coaches to stay motivated.
For McGinley, he enjoys the atmosphere that the team and staff bring.
“Just having a great staff around me makes things fun, and honestly, having a great group of kids around me makes it fun,” McGinley said.
For Boyd, he enjoys creating relationships with the wrestlers and watching them grow. “There are some wrestlers I do early morning workouts with, and I’ve watched them grow over the last couple of years,” Boyd said.
According to Boyd, he has a “great time working with Mr. McGinley.”
“It’s my favorite thing and it is what keeps bringing me back,” Boyd said. “It’s the relationships.”
For wrestler Kuso Hernandez, the mental component can be challenging.
“The mental aspect is also really hard to maintain whilst wrestling. You have to have a desire to keep going,” Hernandez said.
According to freshman Cody Moore, his biggest struggle was the practices.
“We do a lot of hard conditioning,” Moore said. “The entire sport revolves around conditioning.”
For Hernandez, a struggle would be the “time commitment, getting there every morning and on weekends it takes a lot of time.”
“Practices and tournaments are also hard,” Hernandez said.
There are also many accomplishments throughout the season of wrestling like qualifying for states.
“Tyler Geiger, Erick Dominguez, Ben Beckett, Colt Lester, getting those guys to the state tournament is a really big success,” McGinley said.
Wrestling coaches aim to keep players motivated
To keep the wrestlers motivated, coaches stay positive and drive their athletes to keep going during the school year.
