To promote awareness to students of new potential interests and activities, Discovery Club helps students at the high school explore this within the different clubs.
The idea of Discovery Club was created by juniors Kami Ziegler and Sophie Dubois. According to Ziegler and Dubois, they always had a passion to explore different clubs but didn’t want to make a commitment to something new.
Afraid they wouldn’t enjoy new clubs outside their surrounding, they discovered many students also felt this way and wanted to do something about it.
“We noticed that some lower graduates had struggled to explore new options, and also like I have said we personally never would have stepped out and joined some of these clubs,” Ziegler said.
By filling out paperwork and going over the idea with Discovery Club advisor Alison McGovern, Ziegler and Dubois had hope for this new club idea.
“I knew these girls from previous years, both hard working, excellent students so I had reason to believe that they could manage this club well if they both put in the effort and conduct it you know efficiently” McGovern said.
Students in Discovery Club explore different clubs every month to potentially try something new that may spark interest and step them out of their comfort zone.
The first “interest meeting” is held during Red Zone on Wednesdays, according to Ziegler.
This is a meeting to get students aware of the club they will be checking out.
Afterwards, Ziegler and Dubois work out their schedules to plan something after school and have a fun time with Discovery Club and the potential club they will be collaborating with.
Dubois hopes to get more awareness of the club by promoting it and having a larger group of students. “There’s always room for growth in of our club so hopefully it can get expand it and people’s horizons by signing up,” Dubois said.
Ziegler and Dubois work hard to ensure students enjoy the activities that are offered and hopefully spark a new interest and a potential new hobby.
Junior Elizabeth Shurtz, a former student in Discovery Club, is appreciative of both Ziegler and Dubois’ efforts.
“I think they both are managing it well [as they are] both determined students and conduct well worked out plans,” Shurtz said.
The last club Discover Club collaborated with was the Astronomy Club.
