To recognize student’s achievements inside and outside of school, National Honor Society’s (NHS) new advisors hope to build relationships with new and existing members.
Attempting to build NHS, English teacher Angela Wahl and math teacher Carrie Harris hope to bring juniors and seniors together, for their first year as advisors to serve the community and school.
According to Harris, she is hoping to “expand her horizons” by advising the club.
“I am excited to know students in a different way,” Harris said. “Instead of just teaching, I can build relationships with students in a club capacity.”
Wahl is looking forward to the new members that will join this year.
“We have met existing members, but induction is coming up later in the month,” Wahl said. “I look forward to meeting the new members potentially joining us.”
Wahl and Harris are excited to be advising this club.
“We had just got applications coming in from the very start of the year,” Wahl said.
National Honor Society officer Ronan Carolan is going into this organization for his second year.
Carolan is eager to be a part of this organization once again with new advisors.
“They are great, hardworking teachers and I am sure they will conduct this club efficiently,” Carolan said.
According to Carolan, students part of this club are willing to sign up to volunteer.
In the last couple of years, NHS has signed up to be a part of food drives with more hours of volunteering.
National Honor Society is a program found in a lot of American schools and is an organization that recognizes students’ achievements for more than just academics.
The program shows off students’ accomplishments and also their contribution to the community both inside and outside the school.
According to Wahl and Harris, there are certain characteristics they look for within a student known as the “four pillars.”
The four pillars are scholarship, service, leadership and character.
According to Wahl, being inducted into the National Honor Society reflects more than just academics.
“I think they will serve you post-graduation no matter where you head,” Wahl said.
When applying to the National Honor Society, referrals are required from two teachers or advisors.
“[Teachers] give that student a positive referral saying they could potentially be accountable as a good member,” Harris said.
Prior to joining the club, students must complete 20 hours of volunteering and must complete an additional 20 hours while being in the club.
