Getting ready to celebrate… Looking forward to the Memorial Day holiday, sophomore Janvi Patel purchases festive plates for a barbeque. Memorial Day will take place on May 27 nationally.

By spending time with family and friends, the community celebrates Memorial Day to commemorate veterans on May 27.
Memorial Day is a national holiday, dedicated to fallen military personnel.
Many people plan celebrations to commemorate those fallen veterans in honor of the country and its heroes.
Some high school clubs offer activities to commemorate lost veterans and raise awareness of the importance of Memorial Day.
According to Support Our Troops Club Vice President Carson Kolumber, the club spends time over the holiday weekend honoring passed veterans.
“Every year we go to upper Salford park and plant flags in the flower bed,” Kolumber said.
The club finds names and titles of veterans and takes time to honor them individually.
“The flags are with the names of veterans and which wars they were in,” Kolumber said.
Sophomore Janvi Patel claims that the holiday should be talked about more.
“I didn’t know a lot about the holiday until a few years ago, it just wasn’t talked about a lot until I was able to do my research,” Patel said.
Many people feel the need to honor veterans that they know.
“My grandfather served in the military. He did not pass, but he had many friends who did,” freshman Lillian Lorenc said.
There are many ways to celebrate Memorial Day. Some people attend barbecues, go on holiday or watch parades.
According to sophomore Lauren Scanlon, Memorial Day is a time to enjoy the company of friends and family.
Scanlon and her family host an annual Memorial Day barbecue.
The Scanlons spend time in the morning preparing for the event.
“[The barbecue] marks the start of summer for me,” Scanlon said.
