In the hopes of increasing school spirit, Student Council held Red vs. White on April 4-5 where students competed in pool and gym-based activities.
The two teams, the red team and the white team, were split up by last name.
Students with A-L last names were on the Red Rebels, and M-Z names were on the White Warriors
The White Warriors ended up victorious after the gym and pool nights, ending with a score of 85-80.
The first night of Red vs. White was pool night, which featured events like the t-shirt relay, obstacle course and medley relay. The next evening, students participated in gym night that included an obstacle course, dodgeball, tug of war and tire pull, among others.
The teams received points based on their victories in each events.
According to Student Council president Emma Potter, the Red vs. White was introduced to Souderton because it has been a successful tradition at Hatboro-Horsham School High School.
“This has been a thing that is really big at other schools,” Potter said. “Hatboro-Horsham has been doing it for a really long time, and it’s pretty big there.”
Potter also said that Student Council hopes that this event will stick around.
“I feel like this is going to be the most difficult year because it’s the first year, and a lot of people don’t really know what it’s about, but hopefully it just becomes a thing that gradually over the years gets bigger and more exciting,” Potter said.
Student council advisor Melissa Kling also believes that school spirit was one of the main goals of the Red Vs. White, and hopes that this is only the first year of many.
“The goal this year was to have the kids that came to have fun [have fun], and bring back some school spirit. I think that’s something that we really need at school again,” Kling said. “I’d love to eventually get more groups of different students involved.”
Kling says that part of the Red Vs. White moving forward may be expanding beyond just the gym and pool nights.
“Not everybody’s into gym night, not everybody’s into the pool, but we had an art team this year that designed the two banners,” Kling said, “so get the art students involved. I’d love to find a way to get the music students involved, and a dance team could be somewhere in there.”
While this may be a part of future Red Vs. White’s, this year was focused on the pool and gym night.
Senior Kim Rothenberger participated in the Red Vs. White this year as a member of the White Warriors.
“I decided to participate this year because it just sounded like fun,” Rothenberger said. “Seeing other schools do it, it seemed like an atmosphere I wanted to be a part of.”
White Warriors senior captain Ben McMackin feels the same about the event, prompting people to “come out next time,” because it will be even more fun with more people.
According to Kling, the Red Vs. White will continue to expand and encompass new events and people.
“I’m hoping that momentum just kind of carries on and we can remember that come next year,” Kling said.
Kling, Potter and McMackin hope for the Red vs. White to continue for the forseeable future.
Kling believes that this “may take a few years.”
