Through following Philly fan-favorite Jason Kelce during the 2022 NFL season as he navigates injuries, a Super Bowl against his brother, his growing family and the possibility of retirement, the “Kelce” documentary provides insight into the highs and lows of Kelce’s career.
The Philadelphia Eagles center introduces the world to his family as they are featured in the documentary.
Viewers get to know his wife Kylie McDevitt-Kelce, his daughters, his parents Ed and Donna Kelce and his younger brother Travis Kelce, who also plays in the NFL as a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The documentary starts in the summer of 2022, with Kelce appearing on Philadelphia Sports Radio 94 WIP and recalling the speech that he gave at the 2018 Super Bowl parade.
Dressed in full Mummers attire, Kelce gave an empowering and vibrant speech about underdogs.
“You know what an ‘underdog’ is?” Kelce said to a crowd of Eagles fans, “It’s a hungry dog. Hungry dogs run faster.”
Although he used these words to describe the Eagles 2018 season, they also apply to Kelce’s experience throughout the 2022 season.
Although the season started strong with an 8-0 record, the team hit a rough patch when star quarterback Jalen Hurts got injured.
Along with that, Kelce’s performance on the field noticeably began to suffer.
But despite all this, the team was able to come together and recover to end up making it to the Super Bowl.
Just like Kelce said in 2018, Philly is a city that never gives up.
From riding a high at the beginning of the season to hitting what felt like rock bottom, Kelce and his teammates’ ability to come back stronger can inspire audiences when facing difficulties.
However, team performance wasn’t the only struggle Kelce dealt with during the 2022 season.
With Kelce currently having undergone seven surgeries of his own, the 35-year-old didn’t know how much longer he could physically play football.
He explains how the injuries throughout his career, including the ankle injury he sustained in 2022, factored into his possible retirement decision.
According to Kylie, fans don’t always realize how the beating football players endure affects how they can interact with their families.
“I would like him to retire when he will still be able to get down on the floor and play with our kids comfortably,” Kylie said in the documentary.
With Kylie pregnant with their third child, viewers were able to follow Kelce along his journey as he and his wife debated the tough question that every player has to face: is it time to hang up their jersey?
With this decision looming over the season, Kelce worked hard and cherished every minute on the field while also exploring outside opportunities.
One goal of his was to find an opportunity that him and his brother could work on together during the NFL season.
The two of them ended up starting a podcast called New Heights, which quickly became one of the most popular sports podcasts.
“New Heights is our new talk show where we will be giving you next level access in the NFL from Philly all the way to Kansas City,” Travis said as he introduced the podcast in their first episode.
The love and respect these brothers have for each other is evident on their podcast as well as in the documentary.
It was especially highlighted when the two brothers ended up facing off in Super Bowl LVII.
The whole Kelce family became highly publicized as they were the first two brothers to play each other in a Super Bowl.
Although Travis ended up with the Lombardi trophy and Super Bowl ring, fans were able to experience the sweet moment when the brothers shared an embrace on the field after the game.
The documentary ends with Kelce’s third daughter being born and him finally making the decision to continue playing with the Eagles for another year.
The heartwarming ending left fans excited for the 2023 season.
